Bachelor of Fine Art 4.5 years: Interior Design

Download Ba interior Design Major Form (PDF)

For over 50 years, the Interior Design Program at San Jose State University has educated students in programming, space planning, interior architecture, and furniture design. Interior Design majors study to conceptualize, problem solve, and evaluate using methodologies firmly grounded in the architectural phases of design schematics, design development, and construction methodology. At the beginning of their SJSU education, students will declare BFA Interior Design as their major. A portfolio review will occur in DsIT 103 Interior Architecture Foundations Studio.

As professionals, interior design graduates must understand the inter-relationship of basic theories of design, behavior and visual communication as regards human beings and the built environment; they must be able to conceptualize, problem-solve and evaluate using methods firmly grounded in human factors, laws, building codes, regulations and other standards (ADA, Barrier Free Code, Title 24, UBC) that effect design solutions for all types of habitation, and for a variety of populations (young, older, disabled, low and high income).

Many Interior Design Program graduates have gone on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Design, or Master of Fine Arts degree in Design, or the professional Master of Architecture degree at such institutions as the University of California, Berkeley; UCLA, University of California, Los Angeles; California Polytechnic University; California College of the Arts; Rhode Island School of Design; and Stanford University. Interior Design graduates are recognized nationally and internationally for their talents and skills but are also recognized for their role in the evolution of Silicon Valley’s professional design community. Interior Design graduates currently hold or have held positions with such nationally and internationally acclaimed architectural firms such as: SOM, Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP, Architects; HOK, Hellmuth Obata and Kassabaum, Architects; Gensler, Architects; Smith Group, Architects; IA, Interior Architects; and RMW, Robinson Mills and Williams, Architects.

The San Jose State University School of Art and Design BFA Interior Design Program is accredited by NASAD, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, which is recognized by the NCIDQ, National Council for Interior Design Qualifications.
