The Industrial Design Program at SJSU strives to provide a strong professional preparation supported by solid university-level general education and to conform to national and international standards and expectations in this field. The program is structured to balance the initial broad accessibility for students with very diverse backgrounds with the high professional expectations of its graduates. The beginning program is open to incoming students on the first-come-first served basis, and enrolls a wide variety of students from recent high school graduates through junior college and bachelor degree graduates. The rigorous BSID Portfolio Reviews for passage through the highly structured upper part of the program ensures high quality graduates. These reviews are conducted by full-time and part-time faculty and allow us to evaluate and adjust the content of individual courses as well as the level of expectation of student performance.

The program has concentrated on the integration of solid training in traditional and computer-based professional skills, education in integrative design theory and related knowledge, and outcomes-oriented structured curriculum leading to an extensive portfolio of projects. Over the last three decades, due to its location in Silicon Valley, the program benefited from and contributed to the development of the Bay Area as a major international center of Industrial Design. The placement record is excellent and our graduates play a major role in this area while competing with a national and international pool of talent. The program has achieved a strong reputation through national and international competition awards and has attracted a substantial amount of external financial support.
