The Digital Media Art program is dedicated to studies in art that explore the nature and implications of emerging information technology. Reflecting the Silicon Valley region, the Digital Media Art program area is research and experimentation oriented. Course work provides for introductory and advanced study of digital visualization, interactive multimedia, digital video, networking and virtual reality. Admission to the program is first screened by a portfolio review for enrollment in ART 101A, Introduction to Digital Media Art. Successful completion of the course with a grade of B or better and passage of a portfolio review admits the student to the concentration and allows them to enroll in advanced courses in the field.

The Digital Media Art program is closely tied to the Computers in Art and Design Research and Education (CADRE) program. The CADRE program enables special events, sponsored projects, and research funded by industry or through CSU grant programs. CADRE has generated over 2.5 million dollars in hardware, software and network donations that provide for the support and maintenance of three laboratories. Students benefit directly from CADRE activities including the following: a new visiting artist/theorist-in-residency program, an annual public symposium featuring student accomplishment, and the publication of SWITCH, CADRE's internationally recognized on-line journal dedicated to theoretical discourse. Other enterprises benefiting students include conferences, exhibition programs and opportunities to work directly with faculty on special projects.
