The Design programs collaboratively offer the BA Art, Design Studies concentration to students interested in the general study of design without the professional character and specialization of the BFA or BS degrees offered by the Graphic, Industrial and Interior Design Programs. The BA degree is chosen either for the interdisciplinary study of design leading to future graduate education or for the practical but not the professional applicability of broad aesthetic, problem-solving and analytical education typical of design. Its graduates find employment in a variety of corporate functions associated with business communication, advertising, product development and prototyping, space planning, sales and promotion, purchasing and many other business careers in the Silicon Valley economy. Societal need for such a degree comes from the ever-changing nature of business in Silicon Valley and the constant evolution of interdisciplinary career opportunities combining broad liberal arts education with outcomes-oriented design preparation.
