Charles teaches Design History and Introductory Typography at San Jose
State University, and Information Design at San Francisco State. He was
once the Creative Director of Digital & Brand in the San Francisco
office of frogdesign. While a Creative Director at USWeb/CKS in the Knowledge
Management division, he led a team to create an academic community site
for Encyclopaedia Britannica. As the Creative Director of Adobe.com, he
accomplished a series of global redesigns, and the creation of a new Type
browser.
Other activities have included teaching design history and experimental
typography at Calarts & Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, lecturing
at Central College of Art in London, broadcast design at RGA/LA and editorial
illustration for the LA Times Sunday Magazine. Charles has an MFA from
Calarts, a B.F.A from the University of Alberta, and his work has been
published in Baseline & ID.
