Blowing glass in the hot shop

overview

Welcome to the SJSU Glass Arts site! Our enthusiastic community uses glass as a medium to define new methods of interpreting the physical, temporal, and intellectual world. We explore all aspects of glass in the arts including blowing, hot glass casting, kiln casting, fusing, multi-media, sculpting, kinetic, sandblasting, and cold working, including cutting, grinding, and polishing. Glass work is a group activity and we work together to increase everyone's knowledge and skill levels. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced student or simply want to incorporate glass into your art, you'll find yourself quickly addicted to the creative potential of glass!

Our program welcomes undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students. We are all members of the SJSU Glass Guild, a guild that creates glass art and functional items that we sell to raise money to fund our program. Our Guild provides scholarships to our members to study glass at other schools including the Pilchuck Glass School and the Pittsburgh Glass Center. The Guild also pays for members' participation in industry conferences, including the Glass Art Society annual conference and the Bullseye-sponsored BECon.

Guest artists and the supportive glass community in the San Francisco Bay Area help us to extend our knowledge of glass and the glass arts. We work closely with the artists at the Bay Area Glass Institute to develop new techniques and promote the appreciation of glass arts in the community.

The Glass Arts program is in the Spatial Arts Program in the SJSU School of Art and Design. We work very closely with the SJSU Ceramics Program and the other programs in Spatial Arts.
